Information to help your business benefit from telecommunications

What is going on with Plusnet?

Question marks

There’s nothing so juicy as a good rumour, and at the moment the internet is rife with them. Even in our own world of telecommunications there’s always a frisson of excitement when we hear of the latest acquisitions; are Vodaphone and 3 really merging? How did a hacker force a Russian military satellite operator offline and here’s the one we’re bring to your attention today, what’s up with Plusnet?

For anyone reading this who wonders who Plusnet is and why you should be interested, a little explanation: Plusnet, as a company has been around since 1997. They are, or perhaps we should say have been, what they call in their own words a “triple play internet service”, meaning that they have offered broadband, landline and mobile services. They’ve been owned by BT since 2007, but operate entirely independently. Why have been? Because they’re now a double (twin?) play internet service. As of the 23rd March Plusnet no longer offer mobile services to their customers. Have a look at their website and you’ll see that they’re just offering 30-day EE SIMs.

There’s more, though, because Plusnet have also withdrawn Plusnet Business, so anyone having a business account with them has had all three of their ‘triple play’ services cut. Which, incidentally, means that Plusnet email addresses are going to be lost, that there’s no possible migration to residential accounts and no option to retain static IP blocks.

So, what’s going on?

We’ve mentioned that Plusnet is owned by BT, and so this is all part of BT’s wider rebranding and repositioning policy. In essence what BT has decided is to offer SME broadband services directly through their own BT business website, rather at the expense of its existing Plusnet customers.  Happily, though, BT isn’t your only option, if you contact us here at TP Telecom we’ll sort out a ‘triple play internet service’ that will do everything your business needs it to and quite possibly for a cost that will make you wish you’d given us a call years ago.
