Your warning regarding copper lines

Red telephone handset

Far be it from us to be like “a leaking roof in a rainstorm” as the Bible’s book of Proverbs refers to someone who nags, but have you given any further thought to the soon-to-be-upon-us demise of copper wire-based telecoms? We wrote about this in last September’s blog, but perhaps mentioning that this wasn’t something that was immanent gave a false sense of security because now, four months on, it is. Very soon everyone still using traditional phone lines are going to have to make the decision to invest in something new...

In a nutshell then:

All copper line services will be withdrawn at the end of 2025. Telephone exchanges will simply no longer supply the 50V current they’ve supplied in the past to keep lines working if there’s a power loss. It will be the end of telecoms as we’ve known them since, well, since we first started sending the spoken word along wires. This isn’t limited to business lines, it affects all lines, so ‘phones and broadband services that require a ‘phone line (ADSL+ and Fibre to the Cabinet). It will also impact all alarm call systems that rely on a ‘phone line, think home security and elderly fall systems for a start, plus emergency lift lines

Let’s move on to the ‘What next?’ Now, you could leave everything until the last minute and join all the others in the long queue that’s going to form when everyone realises they have to act

or

you could act now. And one good reason to act now is that you’ll save money. How so? we hear you ask. Well, we reckon that Openreach is going to grab every opportunity to make money out of the change and we’ll therefore see at least a couple, if not more, price rises in the next 12 months. Those that buy now won’t be hit by these opportunistic rises. There’s another good reason though, the sooner you move away from those old copper wires, the sooner your phone and broadband service will improve. You could well find that your new broadband is both faster and more reliable, and you’ll be surprised at just how feature rich the latest phone lines are, they’re also far more flexible than copper and, unlike copper, they’re designed specifically to meet the demands of business use.
