Does one size really fit all?

Old style desk phones

One size fits all, now, how many times have we all read that label and immediately concluded that we’re looking at something that’s going to try and be all things to all people? Admittedly it’s a label that usually applied to clothing, with the word ‘size’ being a bit of a give-away, ultimately meaning that far from fitting everyone, the item in question will actually fit no-one well and everyone either badly or, at best, adequately.

Think for a moment of the vibe that a ‘one size fits all’ label provokes. It’s somehow always the cheaper option, a little bit tawdry and down market, trying to be all things to all men, and that brings us to the point of this month’s blog: one size fits all is a cop out. Very often, of course, the last thing any manufacturer wants you to think is that they’ve cut corners, and potential costs, by making items that no longer have to be cut to size or made to measure. An extremely successful example of this would be kitchen units, which, in times before, were made to fit the kitchen in question but now are made in 600mm units or whatever, so much so that, in the majority of cases, kitchens are now designed to accept one size fits all units, with the loss of individuality and specific purpose that goes with it. And here’s the question: do we consider ourselves to be somehow under serviced by this? Probably not, we put up with it, knowing, if we think about it at all, that there are bespoke kitchen manufacturers out there whose wonderful products would see our house on the front of Homes and Gardens, and our bank accounts wrung dry.

And now to phone systems. Yes, there are those companies, most of them in fact, who will offer you their perfect one size fits all solution to your business needs. It won’t much matter how many employees you have, the size of your premises, your plans for the future, how many of your people are out on the road, working from home or accepting and/or processing orders as they go, their product will, so they claim, do it all. And then there’s TPTele, where we’ll ask you everything about your business and where it’s going, and then design that bespoke system that exactly fits your needs and works the way you need it to. And, you know, it won’t cost you a penny more…
