Cheap services can cost you a lot!
Local Loop Unbundling (LLU)
Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is the process where BT makes its local network (the copper cables that run from customers premises to the telephone exchange) available to other telecom providers. These LLU providers are then able to provide phone line and broadband services direct to the customer.
The main advantage of LLU services is that they are cheap. This is due to the fact that LLU providers no longer need to pay BT a fixed rental charge for access to the lines. However it does mean that they take full responsibility for maintaining and upgrading lines and that is where things can go horrible wrong.
Most LLU providers don't have engineers across the county to fix local issues so they rely on Openreach engineers to do this for them which is great since they are best qualified to do so. However the LLU provider has to pay for each and every engineer call out and since a single call out is likely to wipe out any profit they make they may be unwilling to do so.
You may also find that other users in your area can get superfast fibre broadband but your LLU provider has not upgraded your connection so you cannot.
